Community hall on Mabuyag Island, Zenadth Kes, Torres Strait, Australia

Anita Herle (University of Cambridge) and Jude Philp (University of Sydney) gave a presentation at the community hall on Mabuyag Island, Zenadth Kes (Torres Strait, Australia). The presentation and discussion focused on their book Recording Kastom: Alfred Haddon’s Journals from the Torres Strait and New Guinea, 1888 and 1898, which was produced in consultation with Islanders.

The discussion focused on ways of making museum collections accessible to Islanders and the value of historic materials (objects, photographs, and archives) for Islanders today. The event was part of a day-long celebration marking NAIDOC (National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee) and hosted by Cygnet Repu, Senior Elder and Torres Strait Reginal Authority portfolio member for Culture, Art and Heritage.
